A smoking 1959 Cadillac

3 votes

My 1959 Fleetwood is blowing a fair amount of blue smoke. The car has 94,000 miles, was in storage for 35 years in Texas, and was just brought to life about a month ago. She runs well, has a good bit of power, but I get the feeling that the rings might be weak or broken in a cylinder or two. What is the best way to check for that? And if indeed it is weak compression, is there anything that can be done other than a complete rebuild?  Here's a picture of the old bird when I found her in the Fort Worth barn in August:

I agree with the compression check as well, and also keep a close eye on oil consumption, as the problem could be either rings or valve stem seals (a much easier fix).

Do a compression check, dry and wet and compare.  Since I have heard the car run, (w/o an exhaust system), the engine does not sound that bad.

I would go with the compression check as well.
