How drivable is a 1938 Packard Twelve or Super 8?

0 votes

I'm really interested in purchasing a 1937-1941 Packard and wondering how they drive. Any tips would be appreciated. Things like: is the overdrive good enough for modern highway use?  How light is the steering. Will it pull a big hill without trouble?  How about the brakes?

I believe that the Super Eight would be my choice for continued driving, in fact I've driven them many uninterrupted miles consistantly. The bore is 5" and gives excellent low end torque. You can slow down to almost a crawl and pick the car up in high gear. The 12 is both more expensive to buy, more expensive to maintain, and is requires more constant adjusting if you chose to drive it daily, (just try diagnosing which plug fouled/plug wire problem, on the road) and you'll see what I mean!

Wellington, thanks for the great response. That's good to hear. I'm attracted to the 12 simply because it's the top of the line (and I'm crazy for having all the options).  But the Super 8 sounds like a really good alternative. Plus, they're all gorgeous.
