My 1958 Cadillac is boiling gas. Help!

1 votes

My 1958 Eldorado Seville with the tripower carbs is boiling gas after a few minutes of running. This causes the car to be very difficult to start until it cools down.  What we've examined: the intake manifold is well over 250 degrees, but once removed from the car, appears normal. The timing is also normal. The carbs have been rebuilt (as has the engine).  The gaskets and such all appear normal. It does have a Pertronix ignition, but beyond that, everything is bone stock. Suggestions?

Check the heat riser valve on the LH exhaust manifold.  I suspect that it is rusted closed.  This valve, when the engine is cold is shut and diverts the hot exhaust gas up through the intake manifold to heat up the carburetor (center in your case) and it routes out the RH exhaust manifold.  As the engine warms up, this valve opens up and then there is no more hot exhaust supposed to go through the intake.  This is to prevent the air/fuel mix icing up when cold.

If the valve is frozen shut, the hot exhaust gases are forced under the carburetor all the time and that will boil the fuel.

Replace the valve or omit it.  Coopers sells a valve that fits and that is what I put on my 58 tripower car.
